With all this change coming at us so steadily we may feel the need to retreat and hide out at home and remain in our comfort zone with the New Moon in Cancer on the horizon. Yet with the polarity coming from Pluto in Capricorn as it moves closer to an exact opposition we feel this Saturnian pull that desires to deeply transform us. During this time the shifting nodes of fate form a square with the Moon and Pluto bringing karma and fate into the mix.
There’s a power struggle occurring in the sky and also within each one of us right now. We will feel this beyond today and throughout the month as we figure out who and what will win. Emotions run high as important messages emerge. This is a complex psychological metamorphosis we are amidst that will require release of our old selves and stories.
We are weighing the safety and security of home keeping our security blankets close as we consider the uncomfortable, sharp edges and danger that comes with subjecting ourselves to “the climb.” The moon is very cushy here in its rulership in Cancer but Pluto in Capricorn still has an agenda to satisfy. So what can we learn from the lifestyle polarities of the crab versus the mountain goat?
A land crab’s burrow is called a sanctuary which is defined as a place of refuge or safety. They’re also surprisingly good at adapting to a variety of situations. They’ve been known to actually work together to provide food and protection for their families. Some even roam the ocean in groups like little gangs. Even more interestingly the female crabs actually release their eggs into the sea upon the waning moon specifically.
On the other hand, we have the mountain goat who literally bed down and sleep right on the trail digging little impressions in the dirt on the side of the mountain so they don’t roll downhill while sleeping. Doesn’t that sound comfy? They will rest under cliffs or trees and don’t even bother to shelter themselves from the wind. Their babies actually shelter under their mothers for protection. These animals are so tough and strong they themselves become a place of refuge. Once their mother is ready to give birth to the next baby the following year they’re left to their own devices and pushed out on their own.
These differing characteristics really highlight the Moon/Cancer energies compared to the opposing Saturn/Capricorn energies in our charts. Yet there’s something Pluto and the New Moon really want us to see here as the nodes shift from Taurus and Scorpio into Aries and Libra this same day. Our focus will move from resources and the material plane to finding autonomy within our relationships. I imagine it will all become much clearer over the next eighteen months.
Right now we can prepare ourselves for this next journey by examining what our deepest emotional needs are. Get to know our own Moon signs inside and out. This is who we really are deep down after all. Take a cue from this New Moon to prepare and fortify the home front. The houses where these transits are occurring and connections they’re making to our natal planets is tremendously important to unraveling the story for each of us individually. Also getting familiar with our natal nodes and clarifying what our mission is this lifetime and relying less on what we have previously mastered which has been our comfort zone. This especially sounds an awful lot like the differences between the crab and the goat.
So this is how Pluto is asking us to transform. We must balance nurturing, and self-care with doing the harder stuff that we know will shape us into the people we came here to become. The things that look like discipline, boundary setting and responsibility need regular attention too. Conversely we cannot survive this cycle of death and rebirth without self-love and the creature comforts of home. We are being asked to watch retreating into our sanctuaries so much so we can show up to do the work required to fulfill our destiny, our purpose and our mission. There is no true freedom without discipline because discipline without freedom is chaos. Our haven cannot survive amidst chaos. To protect what’s dearest to us we must each show up prepared to climb.
